Platform: Breast Cancer Awareness, a Family Affair
Platform Description: This platform is very close to my heart, as my own mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. After many surgeries, treatments, and a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, my mother was able to conquer her battle with breast cancer. This battle was also a collective effort daily for my family to help assist my mother with treatments, travel, care, and reassurance by maintaining positive attitudes within our household. I have formulated my platform around this experience and hope to encourage other individuals that a cure for breast cancer is within reach, and to never, ever, give up hope.
How do you hope to promote your platform during your year of service?
My platform “Breast Cancer Awareness: A Family Affair” enables students to learn about prevention of breast cancer by an interactive power point presentation and in-depth discussions. Students are involved in correct decision making regarding their families’ proper nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle decisions to decrease the risk of breast cancer. Focusing on the positives in life brings forth a new focus to set goals high in life, and understand obstacles can be conquered, such as breast cancer, with the smart decisions.
Interesting Facts: My home of Wise County, VA celebrated its 150th birthday in 2006. To commemorate this event, a scholarship pageant was held in which I won the title of Wise County’s Sesquicentennial Queen, and was crowned by Wise County’s Centennial Queen. It is my honor to hold this title until 2056 when I will crown Wise County’s Bicentennial Queen.
